Gregory Thomas “Greg” Stanelle, 75, of Shawneetown, Illinois passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at the Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana. Greg was born on May 11, 1948 in Shawneetown, one of four children born to the late Dr. Wilber Frank and Ronita Ruth (Osby) Stanelle. He married the former Becky N. Duvall on December 21, 1981. Greg retired from the Peabody Coal Company in Kentucky after thirty-eight years and also was a certified butcher. He was also an avid outdoors man and loved reading books. Greg was a proud member of the UMWA local 1793 in Morganfield, Kentucky. Also he served his country in the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1972 during the Vietnam Conflict. As a U.S. Veteran he belonged to the Shawneetown American Legion Post #585 and Eldorado V.F.W. Post #3479. Greg is survived by his loving wife, Becky Stanelle of Shawneetown; three daughters, Julie Duvall and Fiancé Robert Holloway of Ridgway, Teresa and Kenny Back of Sturgis, Kentucky, Angela and Brian Price of Shawneetown; one son, Jon David and Lisa Smith of Shawneetown; eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Also his four legged son, Puppy Boy Cooper. Greg is also survives by life long friend, Steven Michael Green of Shawneetown. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Michael Frank Stanelle; two sisters, Gail Marie Wenzel and Sandra Ruth “Sandy” Butts; his niece, Tracie Annette Stanelle. Visitation for Greg will be held on Tuesday, June 13th from 10 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown. Fellow Veteran and friend Tom Harmon will officiate the service with burial to follow at the Westwood Cemetery near Shawneetown. There will be military rites conducted by the Gallatin County Honors Team. In lieu of flowers donations in Greg’s memory may be made to the Shawneetown Public Library.
