William Eugene “Bill” Smith, 89, of Shawneetown, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2018 at the Harrisburg Medical Center in Harrisburg. He was born on July 2, 1928 in Bowling Green, Ky., one of eight children of the late Walter and Veronica (Deitz) Smith. Bill married the former Patricia Louise Barger on May 21, 1960. He worked at several places during his lifetime, the newspapers of the Carmi Times and Eldorado Daily Journal , International Tables of Henderson, Ky. and his favorite the Bickett Farms here in Gallatin Co. Bill served for two years in the U.S. Army and then reenlisted in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict Era. Also he was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shawneetown and the Shawneetown American Legion Post # 585. Bill is survived by his loving and devoted wife Patty Smith of Shawneetown; their son, Jerry and Lisa Smith of Shawneetown; three sisters, Mary Willett of Smithton, Virginia Quinn of Sturgis, Ky., Delorse Drone of Tallula; two brothers, George Smith of Sun City West, Ariz., Harold Smith of Old Shawneetown; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Thomas Smith; two brothers, Walter D. Jr. and Andrew Smith. Visitation for Bill will be on Monday, July 2, 2018 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown. Funeral service will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 3rd at 11 a.m. with Father Steven Beatty and Rev. Randy Vaughn officiating. Burial will be at the Westwood Cemetery near Shawneetown with Military Rites. Donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the Shawneetown Church of God or the Ridgway American Legion Post #596.
