Sammie Reid “Sam” Morris, 94, of Greenfield, Indiana, passed away at his home on Monday, December 7, 2020. He was born in Equality, Illinois on August 9, 1926, the son of the late Clyde Franklin Sr. and Fannie (Goatley) Morris. Sam married the former Betty Jane Adams on June 14th of 1947. He served in the Navy during World War II and was involved in the first atomic bomb testing in 1946. Sam was recalled to the Navy in 1950 during the Korean conflict. At an early age Sam learned to barber from his father and grandfather making a three generation barber shop in Equality. He later became a prison guard for the state of Illinois and retired from that position. He was a member of the Equality Masonic Lodge #2. Sam is survived by his loving family, his wife of seventy-three years, Betty Morris of Greenfield, Indiana; his daughter, Sandra and Larry Hall of Indianapolis, Indiana; three wonderful women that Sam and Betty accepted into their family and their hearts as daughters, Stephanie and Mark Music of Ardmore, Tennessee, Diane and Phillip Mathias of Greenfield, Indiana, Michelle and Michael Hoovler also of Greenfield; three grandchildren, Kandice Hall Shalauve, Patrick Music and Hanna Music; five great grandchildren, Morgan, Madeline, Mason, Daniel, and Dreyvon. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Clyde Franklin “Tub” Morris Jr. Sammie touched many lives with his quiet, gentle ways and will be missed but not forgotten. Visitation for Sam will be held on Friday, December 11th from noon until service time at 1 p.m. at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Equality. Pastor Curt Morris will officiate with Masonic Rites by Equality Masonic Lodge. Burial with military rites by the Ridgway American Legion Post #596 and Navy Honor Team at the Elmwood Cemetery near Equality. Due to Covid- 19 masking and social distancing will be required.
