Herman "Barney" Barnett Jr., a cherished member of the Harrisburg community, peacefully departed this world on September 8, 2025, at the Carrier Mills Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and dedication. Born on January 18, 1931, in Eagle Creek, Illinois, Barney was a steadfast guiding light to all who knew him.
Barney's career spanned over 30 years as the Circulation Manager of Harrisburg's Daily Register, where he helped shape local journalism, and his contributions remain deeply appreciated.
Throughout his life, Barney was also an active member of the Harrisburg Lions Club, previous Sunday School teacher, church deacon, and was a member of Dorrisville Baptist Church. Later in life, he shared his love for cooking with the community by owning and operating “Treats & Meats Deli” and then the beloved “Magnolia House Tea Room”.
Barney married the love of his life, Wilma Kinney on April 17, 1954. They had a loving marriage of 40 years where Barney cared for Wilma and held onto “in sickness and in health”. Barney was the beloved father of his late daughter Kathy Williams, her absence a profound sorrow felt deeply by all. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Herman Barnett and Helen (Wooley) Barnett. In addition, he was proceeded by Ruth (Daymon) Barnett, who he married later in life.
Barney was a devoted family man, and he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to thrive through his surviving family members. He is remembered fondly by his granddaughter, Amy (Jamal) Oxford, who held a special place in his heart, as well as his great-granddaughter, Callie Oxford, who brought joy and laughter into his life. He was also incredibly proud of Callie’s soon to be husband, Daniel Medin. Many at the nursing home merely knew Daniel as “the pilot”.
A graveside service to honor Barney's memory will take place at noon on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at Sunset Lawn Cemetery in Harrisburg. The service will be led by Pastor Dewayne Taylor. Friends, family, and all who were touched by his kind spirit are invited to gather and celebrate the remarkable life of a true gentleman, a loving family member, and a devoted friend. Barney’s legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heaven's Kitchen P.O. Box #848, Harrisburg, Illinois 62946. Barney was often the “unofficial greeter” of Heaven’s Kitchen and called it his weekly “outing” until his health no longer allowed.
