Guy Edwin Smyth, 67, of Evansville, Ind., formerly of Shawneetown, passed away Friday, July 3, 2015, in Benton, Ky. Guy was born October 3, 1947, in Shawneetown, Ill., to Edward and Mary Elizabeth Kent Smyth. His parents along with an infant brother, Charles Edward Smyth, preceded him in death. Guy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Vanderburgh County. He was a 1965 graduate of Shawneetown High School and was a Vietnam veteran. Guy enjoyed being outdoors and sailing and camping. He also loved home repair projects and nothing was too big or too difficult for him to tackle. He died while doing what he loved along with his family on Kentucky Lake. He was employed as a plumber at Industrial Contractor retiring in 2009. He was currently employed by Mater Dei High School as a maintenance coordinator. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the German Township Water District. Guy is survived by his wife of forty years, Cindy (Phillips) Smyth; one daughter, Erin Smyth, DVM. of Indianapolis; one son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Colleen (O'Connell) Smyth, of St. Louis, Missouri; and the love of his life, his grandson, Isaac James Smyth. Also surviving are his sister, Mary Elizabeth and husband Ron Abell of Ridgway; a nephew, Craig Abell of Mahomet; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sue and Jerry Malone of Tell City, Ind.; and nieces, Kate, Meghan and Lauren Malone. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2015, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 6202 W. St. Joseph Road with Rev. Eugene Schroeder officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 2 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at the Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street where a prayer service will be held by St. Joseph Catholic Church parish at 5 p.m. Friends may also visit with the family from 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The family would like to especially thank Dr. and Mrs. Matt O'Connell who did everything possible to save Guy's life on the lake. The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 6202 W. St. Joseph Road, Evansville, IN 47720 or Mater Dei High School, 1300 Harmony Way, Evansville, IN 47720.
