Doris Joan (Walters) Morton closed her eyes at her home in Equality, Illinois and opened them again at her home in Heaven on the morning of August 13, 2025. She was 87 years old. Doris was born at home in Junction, Illinois on September 12, 1937 to the late James and Mae (Willis) Walters. She was the last surviving sibling of 11 children-Lawrence Walters, Harrison Walters, Edith Beard, Anna Mae Greer, Delbert “Deb” Walters, Nancy Sheppard, John Walters, Hiram Walters, Laura Edwards, and Everett Walters.
Doris was a longtime member of Junction Missionary Baptist Church where she joyfully served as a Sunday School teacher and youth leader for many years. She retired as Postmaster with the USPS after a 35 year career. During her retirement, she devoted her time to supporting loved ones and creating beautiful quilts, a craft she treasured. Doris was passionate about her extended family and being a part of the Walters/Willis reunions.
On March 3, 1957, she married her high school sweetheart, Charley Morton. They had 4 daughters- Kim Morton of Equality, Linda (the late Danny) Patton of Cave in Rock, Pam Householder of Harrisburg, and Jennifer Morton who lives with them at home. The grandchildren are Mandy Patton, Stephanie (Ryan) Patton, Kyle Morton, Kirby Morton and the late Cody Armstrong. They also have 4 great grandchildren-Sophie Armstrong, Elaina Patton, Henry Patton and Lucy Patton. Doris has one surviving brother-in law, Jack Edwards of Norris City. She leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 16th, 2025 at Vickery Funeral Chapel, Equality, IL. Visitation will be from 11am - 1pm with funeral to follow at 1pm and burial at Hogan Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hogan Cemetery.
