Betty Irene (Phillips) Head

Betty Irene Head, 79, of Shawneetown, passed away with her family at her side on Monday, February 9, 2015, 11:25 p.m., at the Ridgway Manor Nursing Home in Ridgway.  She was born on November 14, 1935 in Johnston City, the daughter of Charles Raleigh and Eunice Flo (Stephens) Phillips.  Betty Irene married Bill Head on November 25, 1954.  A member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church she loved to teach Sunday School and had been faithful in that task since she was sixteen years old (Sixty-five years).  Betty Irene was very active in the community in organizations such as Gallatin County Food Pantry, Gallatin County Historical Society, and the Daughters of the American Revolution as Chapter Secretary.  She had many jobs during her lifetime; she owned and operated the Sandpiper Flower Shop from 1984 to 1988; a legal secretary; Head Librarian for the Shawneetown Public Library; and lastly but most important, a mother and homemaker.  Betty Irene is survived by her loving husband of sixty years, Bill Head of Shawneetown; her three sons, William David and Beth Head of Shawneetown, Martin Curtis and Sandra Head of Shawneetown; James Kenneth and Laura Head of Danville; one sister, Shirley and Bob Raines of Marion; seven grandchildren, Sarah and Travis Boots, Bryan and Jennifer Head, Joseph and Tasha Stacey, Jennifer Rose Head, Aaron Head, Rebecca and Alex Kentner, Stephan Head; three great grandchildren; Corrie Joann Boots, Dawson Stacey, Avery Stacey; and another great grandchild expected in April.  She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Phyllis Montavoni and one brother, James Donald Phillips.  Visitation for Betty Irene will be on Thursday, February 12, 2015 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown.  Funeral service will be held on Friday, February 13, 2015 at 10 a.m. at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Shawneetown with the Reverend Cherrie Wilkerson and Reverend Mike Johnsey officiating.  Burial will be at the Westwood Cemetery near Shawneetown.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the DAR, the Gallatin County Historical Society, or the Emmanuel United Methodist Church.
