Andy Baker Jr., 89, of Equality, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2015, 6:35 a.m. at the Eldorado Rehab and Health Care - Fountainview in Eldorado. Andy was born on October 2, 1925 in Hayman, Kentucky, the son of Andy Sr. and Mary (Dixon) Baker. He married Susie Carruba on June 11, 1950, she preceded him in death on August 23, 1986. They had ten children. Andy is survived by his seven children whom he loved and supported; Joanne (Dennis) Scherrer of Shawneetown, Andra Sue (Jim) Rector of Carrier Mills, Mary (Harold) Henderson of Conway, Ark., Carletta (Mickey) Hanks of Marion, Andy (Pam) Baker of McLeansboro, John (Shelly) Baker of Morrilton, Ark., and Chester Baker of Equality; one sister, Bertha (James) Lewis of Cumberland, Ky.; and one brother-in-law, Richard Carruba of Ridgway. Also he leaves twenty-nine grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren. Andy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of thirty-six years, Susie; three children; one great granddaughter; five sisters and three brothers. He worked forty-two plus years as a coal miner in Kentucky and Illinois and was a retired UMWA member. Andy’s passion was gardening and having the “best” garden in Equality. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons, grandchildren and friends. Visitation for Andy will be held on Monday, May 25, 2015 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Vickery Funeral Chapel in Equality. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. at the Sandhill Baptist Church in Cumberland, Ky. with Rev. Terry Mitchell officiating. Burial will be at the Sandhill Cemetery with Andy’s grandsons as pallbearers.
