Mark, Nancy, John, Mikey, Elizabeth, and the rest of the Scates family, you've all been in my thoughts and prayers since I heard the news. Mark(ie) was always a ball of fun to be around growing up.

I remember he was a laugh a minute, with a well-intended mischievous streak a country mile long. But he was also one of the first to be by your side when you needed someone to talk to or needed help with something. I remember seeing him step into the middle of some mean-spirited folks picking on someone who couldn't defend himself once, and all Mark said was, "That's enough of that," and it stopped, they dispersed, and he made sure the person got home safe. He didn't command respect from others; he didn't have to. It was just understood.

May God continue to bless the entire family and give everyone the strength to deal with Mark's passing.

Dear Mark, Nancy, John, Mikey and Elizabeth
I am sending my thoughts and prayers to you and your whole family. Markie was one of the best loved guys I have known. He never met a stranger. I remember growing up next to the city park and always seeing him at Billy's. Wasn't long before the whole crew was there at Billy's. When that happen, it wasn't long before all the girls on the street gathered at my Granny's house being it was right across the street from Billy's. He will be missed by all. Losing a child is one of the hardest things to go through. Sending my love to you all.

Mark and Nancy - Please accept my condolences for the loss of Markie. I have many wonderful memories of spending time with him and all of my other cousins on my frequent visits to Shawneetown as a child and teenager. All of my memories of him involve him laughing and smiling. He was a blessing.
