William "Bill" Scherrer, 92, lifelong resident of Shawneetown, died Saturday April 21, 2012 at Fountainview Nursing Home in Eldorado. Bill was born September 12, 1919 in Shawneetown a son of George Bernard and Susan Maria (Leavell) Scherrer. On October 12, 1940 he married the former Louise Dietz who survives. Bill served in the US Army during WWII. He owned and operated Scherrers IGA in Shawneetown for over 50 years and later opened a IGA store in Harrisburg. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shawneetown and was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. He is survived by his wife of 71 years Louise Sherrer, a daughter Margie Clayton of Shawneetown, a son, Billy (Chris) Scherrer of Shawneetown, two brothers; John Scherrer of Ridgway and Bob Scherrer of South Carolina, six grandchildren; Tony Scherrer, Lee Scherrer, Scott Scherrer, Eric Scherrer, Gary Clayton and Mindy Calloway, 6 great grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter Betty Louise Scherrer, 3 brothers, George Scherrer, Ed Scherrer and Bernard Scherrer, a sister Gertrude Austin and a grandaughter Dee Clayton. A mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 AM Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shawneetown with Fr. Steven Beatty officiating. Burial will follow with military rites at St. Joseph Cemetery in Ridgway. Visitation will be 5-7 pm Monday at Vickery Funeral Chapel in Shawneetown. My sympathy to all the family of Bill Scherrer. I worked for Bill the summer I graduated from high school. He was a wonderful boss and person. Have very good memories of Bill.

My sympathy to all the family. Bill touched my life by giving me a job at the IGA in Harrisburg in 1968. I have enjoyed a 40+ year career in the grocery business because of it. I thank him, my family thanks him and hope he knew how much he influenced many, many people.
